Might suond a bit leftfield but is it possible for you to create a scidebar gadget that works vdm? Instead of having the tray icon with the selcetion window poping up on hover could have a little gadget showing the same image (with the 4 squares - or howver many you have set up) and you just double-click the dt you want to change to - obviously the highliughted dt on the gadget will have to change per dt.

Also since I've said double-click for changing then a single click could sned a flyout with "options" for the particular desktop (either the live one or options for whichever square you click on)
You know what I mean, don;t think I've explained it very well, sorry. lol.

Like this (sorry for my crap photoshopping - done very quickly)

Google Desktop has a little gadget called workspaces that I find really handy (http://desktop.google.com/plugins/i/workspaces.html?hl=en)...but since it'd be nice to use the built-in sidebar in Vista, maybe such a feature would be useful in this app as well? I do like the tray icon as well.

I'd actually thought about doing this. I'll have to read up on creating sidebar gadgets and how to integrate them with your applications. I'm not really sure of the types of "options" you want for each desktop. Maybe things like "Send all Windows to this Desktop" and "Send all Windows to Current Desktop"?

To be honest I dont know either lol - guess I was thinking about the general options and maybe "per desktop settings" such as turning on seperate wallpaper for the specific desktop and like you say the send to option to.
