Am I really the first to discover this?

Anyway, I congratulate for this much wanted piece of software. For a 0.1 release, it has made a good impression on me.

What we all are looking for, of course, are some crazy effects when switching desktops, such like the rotating cube effect under MacOS X. Maybe this project could provide a plugin-interface for selectable switching effects which others then could contribute...

Otherwise, keep up the goog work!

Just some small edges:

- Install takes VERY long to progress from 0% to 1%. What is happening there?

- I cannot CLICK on a desktop in preview, only cursor+return.

- It crashes after closing the option screen, when attempting to restart:

Really great work. Very excited to see this project happening. I have been hoping for something like this since I firet learned that DWM was available and that Vista doesn't come standard with virtual desktops (big mistake, microsoft).

Anyway, looks very promising and seems to work REALLY well. I have been using Dexpot. I LOVE the feature set, but wish it was a little less laggy when there are a few windows open. This seems to have a ton of potential. I'm looking forward to more customizable options (keyboard shortcuts, clicking on a desktop preview, system tray icons for each desktop, etc) as well as the crazy pretty osx-style effects that falcon mentioned.

thanks so much, and please do keep up the good work.

Thanks for your input. I'm looking into the restart bug. The main problem with doing Mac OS X style 3D effects is that Vista's thumbnails API doesn't allow for more than simple 2D painting. Flip 3D is managed by the DWM engine itself. However, I have been thinking of expanding this project with Mac OS X Expose style features.

The slow install is caused by Vista's new version of MSI. For some reason, there is a long delay while MSI tries to determine whether or not to show the UAC dialog.

Hi Zhuman,

MSI delay: So then, my congratulations do not apply to Microdft for their vista -- especially because I run Vista without nag screen (aka UAC)...

Flip3D: I think this will be sufficiently hard to do to justify some sort of plugin mechanism, so that multiple people can cooperate on this. I heard that there is a Firefox plugin doing this for browse tabs. BTW, a rotating 3D cube effect can be programmed w/o 3D, only using two distorted 2D planes...

QUESTION: Does your VDM support hotkey for switching, like CTRL-ALT-F2 for desktop #2?

Mar 11, 2007 at 12:37 AM
Yes, you could do a 3D effect with distorted 2D planes. However, Vista only gives you the ability to use proportionally scaled rectangles. So, sadly, the only effects will use fading, moving, and (maybe) some scaling. Yes, VVDM supports switching between your desktops (up until 9) by using Windows Key + Numpad 1...9. If you have more desktops than 9, you have to use the menu in the system tray. A help file should be in the next release.
